Mia Thermopolis is a geek. Big glasses. Big, frizzy hair. And can't fit in with the popular crowd. She has a crush on the hottest guy in school - who doesn't even notice she's breathing. So smitten over the popular guy, she herself doesn't even notice the breathing boy who actually has a crush on her - her best friend Lilly's oldest brother, Michael.
If you've watched the movie "Princess Diaries" or read the book by Meg Cabot, you know where the story goes next. Her grandmother comes to town and shocks her with the news that she is born of royalty and is the next heir to the thrown. Mia decides to take on the new life. From geek to royalty - overnight. She starts taking princess lessons. Straightens her hair. Uses makeup. Hires other people to make her outfits. And she only tells her best friend, Lilly. Nobody else.
But the nes spreads. At that point everbody wants to be her friend. Her crush, the popular guy, pursues her. She now has the life she so desired.
Do you know the geek? Maybe you are the geek - or at least you feel like it. You look at everybody else around you, want what they have, and are not satisfied with your life the way it is. Perhaps you cry yourself to sleep at night wishing you had a different life. Wishing you were skinnier. Funnier. Prettier. Smarter. Richer.
Mia did. Then she got it. The looks. The boy. The popularity. And then she realized everybody was out for their own gain. They weren't interested in her. The popular guy liked her for his couple of minutes of fame in the tabloids. He even kissed her. But it was all fake.
In the end Mia discovered that her real friend was Lilly - and her true love was actually Lilly's brother Michael. She learned that the life she wanted to live was really the life she already had - she just didn't know it.
